Urgent: Philadelphia Pit Bull Attacks Injure Dogs; Woman Arrested

UPDATE: A series of alarming pit bull attacks in Center City, Philadelphia, has left several dogs injured, prompting police investigations and a woman in custody. Authorities confirmed that the attacks, including one on December 29, are linked to a single pit bull, whose owner may be homeless.

Witnesses reported that on December 29 shortly after 5 p.m., Brian Lovenduski was walking his 12-year-old miniature pinscher, Ziggy, near 12th and Chestnut streets when the unprovoked attack occurred. Lovenduski recounted a terrifying moment when he felt his dog’s leash abruptly pull back.

“I started screaming for help, and two bystanders came to assist us,” Lovenduski said. “At one point, I thought Ziggy might die.” Ziggy suffered severe injuries including a broken jaw and crushed bones in his foot, ultimately requiring an amputation.

Philadelphia police are investigating similar incidents linked to the same pit bull, with attacks reported on December 26 and December 31. On December 26, a 53-year-old man was attacked while walking his dog at Juniper and Chestnut streets, followed by another assault on a 74-year-old man at 19th and Walnut streets on December 31.

As of now, police have not disclosed the location of the pit bull, but they confirmed that a woman is in custody. Charges are anticipated. Lovenduski expressed his desire to alert others, stating, “I just am concerned that there’s a potential danger on the street.”

ACCT Philly is actively involved in the investigation and is searching for the pit bull, which is described as brown and white. Executive Director Sarah Barnett explained the legal complexities surrounding dangerous dog cases. “Filing dangerous dog charges is a process that must be initiated by police, reviewed by the courts, and decided by a judge,” Barnett said.

Meanwhile, Ziggy is scheduled for jaw surgery on Wednesday. Lovenduski, who also sustained injuries while defending his pet, remains in shock but is thankful Ziggy survived the ordeal. “I can’t believe it happened,” he stated.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any sightings of the dog. This developing story raises serious concerns about public safety in the area, especially for dog owners and families with children.
