Urgent Cold Snap Hits Brainerd as Blizzard Conditions Loom

UPDATE: A sudden cold snap has gripped Brainerd and surrounding areas as winter storm warnings are now in effect. After mild, foggy weather since Christmas, conditions dramatically shifted on December 28, 2025, with temperatures plunging and blizzard conditions forecasted.

By midday Sunday, temperatures dropped to about 14°F and continued to fall, accompanied by a blustery northwest wind gusting to 28 mph. The National Weather Service (NWS) warned residents of potential whiteouts and hazardous travel conditions due to blowing snow, particularly in western Minnesota.

Initially predicted snowfall totals for the region have been revised down from a possible 7 inches to 3-4 inches for the Brainerd and Baxter areas, with heavier accumulations expected in Morrison, Todd, and Wadena counties. Currently, Todd County is under a blizzard warning, while Morrison and Mille Lacs counties are facing a winter storm warning.

As of 5 p.m. on Sunday, approximately 3 inches of snow had already blanketed parts of Brainerd, with the NWS issuing a winter weather advisory for Aitkin, Cass, Crow Wing, and Wadena counties. Snowfall is anticipated to taper off by 3 a.m. Monday, but north-northwest winds could gust between 30-50 mph into the early hours.

Tomorrow, residents can expect a return of sunshine after a stretch of gray days, but the high temperature will only reach about 5°F. With wind chill factors making it feel like -20°F, those with errands should consider waiting until Tuesday when temperatures could climb to 30°F with a 20% chance of snow before noon.

Looking ahead, the forecast shows a cold New Year’s Eve with highs around 9°F and lows plunging to -6°F. New Year’s Day promises more cold, ideal for staying indoors with a book or catching a football game, as temperatures remain near 7°F with wind chills around -20°F.

Residents are urged to prepare for these hazardous conditions. Stay tuned to local news and the National Weather Service for the latest updates on this developing winter storm.
