UPDATE: Austin-Travis County is facing a concerning surge in whooping cough cases, with over 130 confirmed cases this year, primarily affecting school-aged children. Health officials are urging immediate vaccinations as the holiday season approaches, a critical time for family gatherings.
Officials report that this spike in whooping cough, or pertussis, marks a significant increase compared to previous years. Dr. Desmar Walkes, the Austin-Travis County Health Authority, emphasizes the urgency, stating, “Infants and older adults are especially vulnerable and can become critically ill if they contract pertussis.”
With the holidays just around the corner, the risk of spreading this highly infectious disease heightens as families come together. Whooping cough is notorious for its severe cough that can lead to a high-pitched “whoop” sound and can last for weeks or even months. The illness spreads through airborne droplets from coughing, making vaccinations all the more crucial.
Vaccines are readily available, and health authorities stress that getting immunized is the best defense against this preventable disease. Children receive DTaP shots starting from 2 months to 6 years, while preteens and teens should receive a Tdap booster. Adults, especially those interacting with vulnerable populations like infants and pregnant individuals, are also advised to check with their healthcare providers about receiving a Tdap booster.
Dr. Walkes urges parents and caregivers to ensure their children are up-to-date on their vaccinations, stating, “I urge all parents and caregivers to ensure their children are up to date on their vaccinations to help stop further spread.”
If a child shows early signs of pertussis, such as a runny nose or mild cough, parents are advised not to delay seeking medical advice. As symptoms worsen, they can lead to severe coughing fits, vomiting after coughing, and difficulty breathing.
Health experts recommend that vigilant vaccination efforts, consistent hand hygiene, and self-isolation when ill are critical steps to protect the community. With this alarming increase in whooping cough cases, the urgency to act cannot be overstated.
