UPDATE: A serious car crash in the Mission District has left six people hospitalized, including two pedestrians in critical condition, following a collision that unfolded Friday afternoon at the intersection of 22nd Street and South Van Ness Avenue.
According to police and fire officials on the scene, the accident involved a vehicle striking two pedestrians, resulting in life-threatening injuries. In addition, four individuals sustained minor injuries when the same vehicle collided with an oncoming car.
Fire Department Assistant Chief Bill Storti confirmed that all six victims were transported to San Francisco General Hospital for treatment. The two pedestrians were rushed to the hospital with severe injuries, while two occupants from each vehicle received comparatively minor care.
Eyewitness reports painted a vivid and distressing picture of the scene. One resident, Amerie Wheeler, described hearing the screeching of brakes followed by a loud crash and frantic cries for help. “I saw two people lying on the street, one of whom was conscious and asking about the other,” Wheeler recounted.
Emergency responders cordoned off the area with police tape, and debris—including shoes and clothing—was scattered across the roadway. One individual from the vehicle that struck the pedestrians was seen being fitted with a neck brace as paramedics attended to the injured.
Storti indicated that he is hopeful both pedestrians will survive, but the situation remains critical.
Authorities are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. The public is urged to avoid the area as emergency services continue to work on the scene.
