Urgent: 40 Treated After Sulfuric Acid Leak in Harris County

UPDATE: A significant sulfuric acid leak at the BWC facility in Harris County has left 40 people treated and two hospitalized, following a catastrophic incident early this morning. The emergency unfolded at approximately 2 a.m. when a catwalk collapsed onto a 6-inch sulfuric acid supply line, triggering a hazardous materials response.

The Channelview Fire Department, leading the hazmat operations, quickly dispatched crews to the 16300 block of Jacintoport Boulevard. Authorities report that two individuals suffering from breathing difficulties were transported to the hospital, while an additional 40 people aboard two ships docked at the nearby San Jacinto Port were evaluated at the scene.

The Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office is actively monitoring air quality due to several reports of illness among those nearby. Images from the scene show personnel from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality arriving to assist in the response.

Authorities confirmed that there is currently no danger to the public, as the leak has been contained to the industrial area. A shelter-in-place order was deemed unnecessary. However, some roads in the vicinity remain closed to facilitate emergency vehicle access. The Houston Ship Channel remains operational, ensuring continued maritime activities.

Investigators noted that incidents of chemical spills like this are rare, but emphasized that the companies involved have some of the most capable hazmat teams trained to manage such emergencies. The leak was successfully halted shortly after 6 a.m., allowing for a coordinated response to the aftermath.
