UMaine Football Secures Fifth Straight Win Over Stony Brook

UPDATE: The University of Maine football team achieved a thrilling victory against Stony Brook, claiming their fifth consecutive win with a 28-14 score on a blustery Saturday afternoon at Morse Field in Orono. This marks the first five-game winning streak for the Black Bears since the 2018 season, when they reached the Football Championship Subdivision playoff semifinals for the first time in program history.

With this win, UMaine improves to 5-4 overall and 4-1 in the Coastal Athletic Association. Conversely, Stony Brook falls to 4-5 and 2-3 in the same conference.

The Black Bears seized control early in the third quarter, scoring two touchdowns just 2:23 apart to build a commanding 21-point lead. Graduate student quarterback Carter Peevy led the charge, contributing significantly with a 1-yard touchdown run, marking his sixth rushing touchdown of the season. This drive was highlighted by a striking 44-yard pass to Aaron Arteaga.

Stony Brook attempted to mount a comeback, with quarterback Quinn Boyd connecting for a 15-yard touchdown pass to Dez Williams late in the first half, narrowing the score to 14-7. However, UMaine quickly regained momentum and sealed the game with an impressive defensive performance, including recovering an onside kick in the final moments.

Peevy completed 14 of 25 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 51 yards. Running back Sincere Baines was pivotal, rushing for 86 yards on 12 carries. The Black Bear defense was relentless, limiting Stony Brook’s leading rusher, Roland Dempster, to just 22 yards on 14 carries.

With seven tackles from linebacker Christian Thomas and five sacks against Boyd, UMaine’s defense was a formidable force. Boyd finished the game with 299 passing yards but faced constant pressure from the Black Bears’ defensive line.

Looking ahead, UMaine will travel to Hampton for a crucial game at 1 p.m. on November 4, 2023, while Stony Brook prepares to host North Carolina A&T at noon. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if UMaine can extend their winning streak to six games.
