Tragic Loss: James E. Smith, 26, Passes Away Unexpectedly

URGENT UPDATE: The community is mourning the unexpected passing of James Edward Smith, 26, who died early on November 8, 2025, in Tampa, FL. Smith, a cherished son, fiancé, brother, and friend, was known for his vibrant personality and commitment to service.

Born on May 21, 1999, at Lowell General Hospital, James was the beloved third son of Maureen and Christopher Smith. He was a proud graduate of Lowell High School in June 2017 and later attended Plymouth State University, where he met his fiancé, Nicole DeCicco. The couple’s dreams of a future together have been shattered by this tragic loss.

James was not only an avid sportsman but also a dedicated member of the New Hampshire National Guard. After completing basic training at Fort Jackson, SC, in 2021, he served in various capacities, including disaster response efforts. He rose to the rank of Sergeant in December 2024 and was preparing for future deployments, demonstrating his commitment to his country and community.

Friends and family describe James as a “once-in-a-lifetime personality.” Known for his contagious smile and ability to connect with others, he was a letterman in football, wrestling, and lacrosse during high school, continuing his lacrosse career in college. His talents extended to skiing and golf, where he excelled from a young age.

The outpouring of support from the community reflects the profound impact James had on those around him. His family expressed heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming kindness received during this difficult time. Special thanks were extended to individuals like Nora Smith Parell, who offered support when it was needed most.

His family has planned visitation on Friday, November 21, 2025, from 3-7 PM at the O’Donnell Funeral Home, located at 276 Pawtucket St., Lowell. A Funeral Mass will be held the following morning, November 22, at 11 AM at Immaculate Conception Church. The committal services will be private for family members at a later date.
