Springfield Fire Department Mourns Lt. Jonathan Miner’s Tragic Death

URGENT UPDATE: The Springfield Township Fire Department is in mourning following the tragic death of Lt. Jonathan Miner, who succumbed to injuries from a home explosion incident on October 29, 2023. The explosion occurred around 10:30 a.m. while the 50-year-old firefighter was engaged in a personal project in his driveway.

Fire Chief Matthew Covey confirmed the devastating news, calling it a deeply traumatic incident. “He was working on a personal project, and that’s what he succumbed to… those injuries,” Covey stated.

Miner was set to celebrate an impressive milestone of 30 years of service in the fire department this November, making his sudden passing an unimaginable loss for colleagues and friends. Capt. Randy Harless, who regarded Miner as his best friend, expressed the profound impact of this tragedy, saying, “It was probably one of the toughest things in my career that I’ve had to deal with.”

The fire department is rallying around Miner’s family during this heartbreaking time. Assistant Chief Matt Strickland, who started his career alongside Miner in October 1997, reflected on their friendship, stating, “We shared an adrenaline issue. We both live for adrenaline, we were both jokesters.”

Miner earned the nickname “Johnny on the Spot” for his unwavering availability to assist neighbors, often providing free food to the community during the pandemic. His kindness extended further as he and his wife fostered over 40 children over the years, showcasing his commitment to helping those in need.

Miner leaves behind his wife, three biological children, and four adopted children. His legacy of service and compassion has left a profound mark on the Springfield community. Harless emphasized the department’s commitment to supporting Miner’s family, stating, “If anything happens to us, we’ll take care of each other’s family… that’s been all of our focus.”

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the incident. In response to the tragedy, the Springfield Township Fire Department has established a GoFundMe page to assist Miner’s family during this difficult time.
