Southern Regional High School solidified its status as the leading public school wrestling program in New Jersey with a commanding victory over Old Bridge High School, winning by a score of 36-9 in the NJSIAA/IBEW Local 102 Group 5 Championship held at Jersey Mike Arena on February 22, 2026. This triumph marked Southern’s fourth consecutive championship in Group 5 wrestling, positioning them just behind Delsea, which holds the record with five straight titles. Additionally, this victory brought Southern’s overall group title count to eight.
The Rams completed the 2025-26 dual meet season with an impressive record of 20-1. Their only loss came against the second-ranked team, Christian Brothers Academy, on January 28. Following that defeat, Southern rebounded strongly, winning their final eleven dual meets and extending their winning streak against public school opponents to 29 matches. Their last defeat to a public school was against Rumson-Fair Haven, which they lost 39-27 on January 28, 2025.
Southern’s performance in the championship was highlighted by an impressive run of six consecutive victories in the weight classes between 120 and 150 pounds. The Rams initially faced a challenge when Old Bridge took a 9-6 lead after a pin by Gavin Young at 113 pounds. However, Southern quickly regained control, amassing a substantial lead of 36-9 following their six-match streak.
Throughout the event, Southern wrestlers demonstrated their prowess, securing five pins, two technical falls, three major decisions, and one decision. Their strategic execution and teamwork were pivotal in maintaining their dominance in the match.
