UPDATE: South Dakota Governor Kristi Rhoden just announced groundbreaking tax relief measures that could reshape the state’s financial landscape. During a press conference on October 26, 2023, Rhoden expressed strong support for Senate Bills 96 and 245, marking them as the largest tax cut in South Dakota’s history.
Senate Bill 96 empowers counties to impose a 0.5% sales tax aimed at reducing property taxes for owner-occupied homes, while Senate Bill 245 establishes a homeowner property tax reduction fund. “This package includes targeted and statewide relief,” Rhoden stated, highlighting the importance of both immediate and long-term solutions for property owners.
The Governor further emphasized that the legislation introduces greater predictability and transparency within the property tax system. “We’ve discussed between 60 to 70 bills on property taxes, and I’m satisfied with the solutions we’ve reached,” Rhoden asserted.
In addition to tax reforms, Governor Rhoden addressed the escalating Iran conflict. Following a significant military operation, B-1 bombers from Ellsworth Air Force Base conducted a mission that targeted key locations inside Iran, successfully degrading its ballistic missile capabilities. This operation, confirmed by US Central Command, involved 34 hours nonstop flight time carrying 75,000 pounds of munitions.
Rhoden expressed his support for President Donald Trump’s military actions, underlining South Dakota’s strategic role in national defense. “This demonstrates the nation’s reliance on South Dakota’s resources and capabilities,” he said, referencing his earlier State of the State address where he proposed that national defense could become a significant economic driver for the state.
The Governor’s remarks come at a time of heightened tensions globally, making the implications of these actions particularly urgent for South Dakotans and beyond. As discussions on property tax reform and national defense continue, all eyes will be on the outcomes of these legislative measures and military operations.
