UPDATE: In a heart-stopping showdown, Soquel High’s boys water polo team fell short against the dominant Sacred Heart Prep, losing 10-7 in the Central Coast Section Open Division semifinals on Thursday at Gilroy High.
The No. 5 seed Knights held a narrow lead at halftime, but the defending champions surged back in the second half to secure their place in the finals. This defeat marks a significant effort from Soquel, who finished with a commendable 23-5 record this season, facing off against a powerhouse that has claimed 13 consecutive section titles.
“Losing sucks, but I think we can take some positives away from tonight’s game,” said Knights coach Ryan Chapatte. “You’re not gonna beat a team like 17-time CCS champ Sacred Heart if you don’t truly believe you can do it.”
Soquel’s impressive start saw them leading 6-5 at halftime, thanks in part to standout performances from junior goalie Rafael Suarez-Abraham who made key saves, and junior Sam Robertson, who scored three goals. The Knights executed their game plan effectively, assisting on five of their first six goals.
However, the tide turned in the second half as Sacred Heart Prep capitalized on Soquel’s foul troubles, outscoring them 5-1. “Our offense went stagnant,” Chapatte noted, highlighting the challenges faced against Sacred Heart’s defensive zone.
Despite the loss, Soquel’s journey in the Open Division has been historic. They became the first team from Santa Cruz County to win an Open Division game, edging out No. 4 Los Gatos 12-11 in the quarterfinals last Saturday.
Looking ahead, Soquel’s season is not over. By reaching the semifinals, they have qualified for the CIF NorCal Regional playoffs. The Knights will find out their division placement, seed, and first-round opponent this Sunday, with the regional playoffs kicking off on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
This thrilling match not only showcased the talent of the Knights but also the fierce competition of the CCS playoffs, leaving fans eager for what’s next in the regional showdown.
