Santa Clarita Celebrates Holiday Spirit with Urgent Tree Lighting

UPDATE: The city of Santa Clarita launched the holiday season with an electrifying tree lighting ceremony at The Cube Ice and Entertainment Center on December 5, 2025. Mayor Bill Miranda initiated the festivities in a dramatic countdown, marking the moment with a glowing puck that lit up the massive Christmas tree at the rink’s center.

As darkness enveloped the ice, a lively crowd of families and children counted down: “3… 2… 1!” The glowing puck slid into the goal, igniting the tree and filling the rink with shimmering lights. “I didn’t think they would turn off the lights!” Miranda exclaimed, relieved that the event was a success on the first try.

The ceremony not only signified the festive spirit but also celebrated the fifth anniversary of The Cube since its acquisition by the city for $14.95 million. Originally at risk of permanent closure in March 2020, local sports enthusiasts rallied to save it. A city study revealed it was the second most used venue in the valley, prompting the purchase that transformed it into a vital community hub.

Miranda emphasized the facility’s importance, stating, “More people use The Cube than almost any other facility in the city.” Today, The Cube serves as a training ground for the UCLA Men’s Hockey Team, the West Ranch Hockey Club, and SNAP Sports, which provides adaptive sports programs for individuals with special needs.

The ceremony featured special guests, including the Los Angeles Kings’ mascot, Bailey the Lion, and former NHL player Daryl Evans, who acted as master of ceremonies. Attendees were treated to a sneak peek of “A Nutcracker Fantasy,” this year’s Holiday Ice Skating Show, scheduled to premiere later that evening.

As families laced up their skates and took to the ice, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement. Some skaters wobbled on their first attempt while others glided confidently around the towering tree. “These skaters pour a lot of work and energy into getting good at their skill sets,” Miranda noted, showcasing their dedication during the event.

Looking ahead, city officials are planning upgrades for The Cube, including an essential Zamboni upgrade and potential transformations to enhance its multipurpose capabilities. Councilwoman Marsha McLean expressed pride in the community’s efforts to secure the rink, noting how it has become a destination for families from across the region.

As the holiday season approaches, The Cube stands as a testament to community resilience and celebration. Families left the event with smiles, ready to embrace the festivities ahead. The successful tree lighting at The Cube is just one of many signs that the holiday spirit is alive and well in Santa Clarita.
