BREAKING: The city of Santa Clarita has just announced the addition of 670 acres to its Open Space Preservation District, a significant development that includes the historic Beale’s Cut. This expansion, confirmed on October 17, 2023, marks a crucial step in preserving vital wildlife corridors between the Santa Susana and San Gabriel Mountains.
This decision is part of a broader initiative that began in 2007, which has now successfully safeguarded over 12,000 acres for preservation. The newly added land is slightly larger than the city of Burbank, covering approximately 18.75 square miles.
Mayor Pro Tem Laurene Weste expressed gratitude towards former state Sen. Scott Wilk for his instrumental role in securing state funding for this acquisition. Weste emphasized that this land represents not only a vital ecological area but also the last significant historical site in the Santa Clarita Valley to be protected.
Beale’s Cut, a 90-foot-deep hand-cut passage through the mountains, has historical significance dating back to the 1850s when it served as the main stagecoach route. Local historian Leon Worden remarked that the city has sought ownership of Beale’s Cut for over 30 years, highlighting the community’s long-standing commitment to preserving this landmark.
The city council meeting agenda outlines the locations of the newly added properties: the LaBelle Property (180 acres) in Castaic, the Vartanian Property (145 acres) along Sierra Highway, the Chaleff and English Properties (49 acres) northeast of the city, and the Forum Engineering Property (13 acres) within city limits.
Worden noted the persistent efforts of the City Council and city staff, stating, “They never took their eye off the ball.” This acquisition is expected to enhance the region’s natural beauty and promote outdoor recreational activities for residents and visitors alike.
Residents can anticipate increased access to nature, wildlife viewing, and educational opportunities as the city continues to develop these open spaces. The impact of this expansion is immediate, promising to enrich the community’s connection to its natural surroundings.
