Salvation Army Urgently Seeks Hundreds of Toys for 400 Families

URGENT UPDATE: The Salvation Army is urgently calling for toy donations to ensure 400 local families can celebrate Christmas this year. With just one week remaining before the distribution begins, the organization is still short hundreds of toys needed to meet its goal.

Inside the Kroc Center warehouse in San Diego, toys such as basketballs, dolls, and markers are piled high, but the collection is significantly lacking, especially for older children. “Even like a Barbie house, this is something that we’ll put aside specifically for a family that maybe we know had a bit extra difficult time this year,” said Glynis Eckert, director of marketing for the Salvation Army Kroc Center.

The toy shortage is particularly critical for children aged 9 to 12, with many donations coming in for younger kids. “The age groups that we get the most donations for tend to be younger children,” explained Janet Reade, director of volunteers and community engagement. “But our pre-selected families can register their children of all ages, from 0 to 12, so we are looking for toys for those older age groups.”

Time is running out! Next week, parents from a pre-registered list will choose toys for their children, with the Salvation Army hoping to provide each family with three or four toys per child. “We, of course, are hoping that every parent can get three or four toys for their children,” Eckert added.

If donations do not increase, the Salvation Army may have to purchase toys out of pocket, creating a significant financial burden that could impact the organization’s broader mission of spreading holiday joy. The goal is to provide each family with a complete Christmas experience, including a sack of toys, gift wrap, bows, and a food box.

“When they go home and they’re wrapping all their toys for their family, they feel like they’ve had the Christmas experience,” Eckert emphasized.

Donations can be made in person at the Kroc Center, online, or through monetary contributions. The need is urgent, and every toy counts. Click here to donate and help make this Christmas special for families in need.
