Salvation Army Launches Urgent Red Kettle Campaign in Fitchburg

BREAKING: The Salvation Army has officially launched its urgent Red Kettle Campaign in Fitchburg, kicking off a crucial holiday fundraising effort on November 12, 2023. As temperatures drop and community needs rise, this year’s goal is set at $125,000 to support families in dire need during the holiday season.

The launch event took place at the Salvation Army’s Water Street headquarters, where staff, volunteers, and local officials gathered amidst festive snow flurries. “The need is great,” declared Lynette Valentine-Warren, Envoy of the Fitchburg Corps. She emphasized that requests for assistance have surged, exacerbated by the recent government shutdown that left many federal employees unpaid and reliant on local resources.

This year’s campaign is particularly pressing, as Valentine-Warren noted, “People who used to give are now receiving,” highlighting a shift in community dynamics. Mayor Sam Squailia joined the efforts, underscoring that all donations will remain within the community, a vital message as 35% of Fitchburg residents rely on SNAP benefits.

The event featured a heartwarming moment when Herb White made the first donation of $1,000 in memory of his late wife, a long-time volunteer. “It’s an important thing, and I have the ability to do it,” he shared, showcasing the spirit of giving that defines this campaign.

The Salvation Army is leveraging modern technology with QR codes on kettles, allowing donors to contribute even without cash. Donations can also be made online at give.salvationarmy.org/campaign/729445/donate.

With the cost of living continuing to rise, the Massachusetts Division of The Salvation Army aims to raise $2.3 million statewide to ensure critical services remain available throughout the holidays. Valentine-Warren stated, “It takes a village to help those in need, and we aim to make this the best holiday season ever.”

As the campaign ramps up, the organization calls on local businesses and community members to join as donors and bell ringers. Those interested in volunteering can reach out via email to [email protected] or [email protected].

The emotional impact of the campaign resonates deeply with volunteers. Bell ringer Sandor Nemcsik, who has served for 15 years, shared that he enjoys connecting with those he meets during the campaign and hearing their personal stories of support and help from the Salvation Army.

Valentine-Warren concluded the launch event with a powerful message: “Let’s fill the kettles and make it the best holiday season ever. People need to feel the love right now.” As the bells ring out across Fitchburg, the community is urged to step up and contribute to this essential cause.
