UPDATE: A Sacramento court has just convicted Hamdi Bazyan on multiple charges, including attempted murder and animal cruelty, following a violent attack on his parents and family cat in December 2021. The jury delivered this shocking verdict on Thursday after hearing harrowing testimony about the brutal domestic assault.
The prosecution, led by Deputy District Attorney Alexandra James from the Elder Abuse Unit, outlined a terrifying sequence of events that began on December 26, 2021, when Bazyan’s erratic behavior prompted his family to call the police. After the officers left, Bazyan armed himself with three large knives and imprisoned his parents in their bedroom, assaulting them with both his fists and a cane.
The violence escalated dramatically as Bazyan turned on the family cat, stabbing her nine times and attempting to suffocate her. His mother, who suffered a stab wound to the torso, ultimately managed to escape to a neighbor’s home for help. Meanwhile, his father sustained multiple stab wounds while trying to protect his wife.
“His mother was able to escape to a neighbor’s home to call police,” stated officials from the District Attorney’s Office, highlighting the desperate situation. Bazyan fled the scene upon hearing police sirens but was apprehended shortly thereafter near the American River bridge shoreline.
Remarkably, both of Bazyan’s parents survived the horrific attack, receiving life-saving medical assistance after his mother’s escape. The family cat also survived the ordeal, despite the brutal assault.
Now, Bazyan faces a significant prison sentence, with sentencing set for a later date. This case underscores critical issues surrounding domestic violence and animal cruelty, sparking conversations about safety and accountability within families.
