UPDATE: The Redondo Union boys basketball team delivered a commanding performance, defeating Democracy Prep from Las Vegas 87-61 during Harvard-Westlake’s Winter Showcase on November 10, 2023. The Sea Hawks, now 3-0 this season, are eager to avenge last year’s near-miss at the CIF State finals.
The match started with a closely contested first ten minutes. However, after a timeout, Redondo Union ignited a spectacular 21-6 run, showcasing their determination to dominate. Star player SJ Madison led the team with 23 points, six rebounds, four steals, and two blocks, setting the pace for the Sea Hawks.
“Our coaches emphasize aggressive defense, and we weren’t executing that early on,” Madison stated. “But we picked it up in the second quarter, and everything took off from there. We are determined not to lose at all this season.”
Madison’s influence was undeniable as he scored eight of the first twelve points in the second half, pushing Redondo’s lead to a staggering 31 points with just 4:21 left in the third quarter. Despite a brief comeback attempt from Democracy Prep, Redondo responded with intensity, allowing Madison and teammate Devin Wright, who added 17 points, to seal the victory.
“We are maintaining that aggressive mindset every game,” Wright said. “We’ve worked hard in the offseason, learning from our past mistakes. These early games prepare us for the challenges ahead in league play and the playoffs.”
Despite the impressive win, Head Coach Reggie Morris emphasized that there is room for improvement. “We didn’t start strong in the first half. I told my guys they need to play with more urgency and aggressiveness on defense,” he said. “Once we did that, we found our rhythm, but I know we can perform even better.”
Morris highlighted Madison’s performance as a key factor in their success, but he also urged Wright to step up his aggressiveness. “If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best,” he stressed, referencing their challenging schedule aimed at preparing for CIF-SS playoffs.
