UPDATE: Project Fire Buddies has just won a gala event valued at $60,000 at the newly opened Hollywood Casino Joliet, aiming to bring joy to critically ill children. This exciting announcement highlights the nonprofit’s ongoing commitment to supporting young patients battling cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.
The event will take place in the fall at the casino’s state-of-the-art 10,000-square-foot event center, providing food, beverages, and A/V production for 400 guests. Ruben Warren, vice president and general manager of Hollywood Joliet, confirmed that Project Fire Buddies stood out among numerous entries due to its impressive impact on families in need.
Founded by firefighter/paramedic Kurt DeGroot in Oak Forest, Illinois, Project Fire Buddies has expanded to over 170 chapters across 15 states. The nonprofit provides tailored gifts, including toys, educational supplies, and dream trips to places like Disney World, ensuring these children experience moments of joy amidst their struggles.
“We noticed children facing serious health challenges often light up when they see firefighters,” DeGroot said. “This gala will strengthen our ties to the community and help us continue our mission of bringing happiness to even more children.”
The Hollywood Casino Joliet team will contribute 40 hours of volunteer support for the event, further emphasizing their commitment to community welfare. The gala is expected to draw significant donations that will directly benefit sick children, with many families likely to attend.
As Project Fire Buddies prepares for its own annual gala on February 7, 2024, at the Tinley Park Convention Center, DeGroot expressed the significance of community support. “Sometimes kids are healthy enough to join us, and sometimes it’s an essential night out for parents. Either way, they deserve this opportunity,” he stated.
DeGroot’s passion for helping children has even drawn in his family, who have been instrumental in planning and delivering gifts. His children have made personal sacrifices to ensure that more resources go to those in need, showcasing the profound human impact behind the organization.
As excitement builds for the upcoming gala at Hollywood Casino Joliet, community members are encouraged to support Project Fire Buddies and the vital work they do for children battling serious illnesses. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the event approaches.
