Police Identify Man Shot by Officers in South San Francisco

UPDATE: A man shot during a confrontation with police in South San Francisco has been identified as 28-year-old Luis Francisco-Manzo, according to the South San Francisco Police Department. The incident occurred on December 8, 2023, and Francisco-Manzo is currently recovering from his injuries at a local hospital.

Police confirmed that officers Brendan Hart and Martin Corona were involved in the shooting. Hart has 8 years of experience, while Corona has been with the department for 4.5 years. Body-worn camera footage from the incident has also been released.

Officers responded to a call from Francisco-Manzo’s mother around 5:10 a.m., reporting her son was under the influence of drugs and expressing suicidal thoughts. When police arrived at the 900 block of Sandra Court, they found Francisco-Manzo with a knife.

The footage shows Francisco-Manzo exiting his apartment and initially complying with police orders to walk backward towards them. However, when he reached the officers, he brandished the knife, prompting them to issue commands to drop it. When he failed to comply, officers deployed Tasers, which were ineffective.

As Francisco-Manzo approached the officers with the knife raised, Hart and Corona opened fire, striking him. He fell to the ground, and officers provided immediate medical aid until firefighters arrived to transport him to the hospital, where he was initially listed in critical condition.

The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office is actively investigating the shooting, with further updates expected in the coming days.
