Officer Placed on Leave After Fatal In-Custody Incident in Oakland

URGENT UPDATE: An officer from the Oakland Police Department (OPD) has been placed on paid administrative leave following a fatal incident involving a suspect during a police response to a home break-in. The situation unfolded just after 4:15 a.m. on Saturday in the 11000 block of Ettrick Street, where the suspect suffered a medical emergency while in police custody.
According to OPD, officers arrived on the scene and located the individual inside the residence. During the attempt to detain him, a brief struggle occurred. The suspect subsequently became unresponsive after being taken into custody. Emergency medical services arrived promptly and transported the suspect to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The incident has sparked a comprehensive investigation led by the Oakland Police Homicide Unit. Additional oversight is provided by the Internal Affairs Bureau, the Oakland City Police Commission, and the Community Police Review Agency, with the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office also involved in the review process.
