According to Captain Brian Knight with Los Angeles County Fire, the leak is emitting gas from a main line located just east of the southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway near the intersection of Ridge Route Road and Pine Crest Place. Fortunately, there have been no reports of explosions or injuries related to this incident.
In response to the leak, the California Highway Patrol has closed all northbound and southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway at Lake Hughes Road. Traffic is being diverted, with northbound vehicles rerouted to SR-126 and southbound traffic directed to SR-138.
Local residents are feeling the impact, with a shelter-in-place order issued for the immediate surrounding areas, including Charley Canyon, Hillcrest, and Wayside. Multiple callers have reported hearing loud booms in the Castaic area, raising concerns over the severity of the situation. Additionally, a strong gas smell has been detected as far away as Santa Clarita, Stevenson Ranch, and Valencia.
