UPDATE: In a significant development, nearly all lots on the Coast Guard Housing property in Nahant have now been sold, with construction already underway for new homes. Town Administrator Alison Nieto confirmed this news just moments ago, noting that only the 12th lot remains occupied by a tenant, as the Town engages in ongoing litigation with the property owner.
Construction is actively taking place, with one house on Castle Road nearing completion and two additional homes on Goddard Drive currently under construction. “There’s been construction activity, which is good,” Nieto stated, emphasizing the positive momentum for the area.
However, concerns have been raised by local residents regarding the size of the house on Castle Road, with some questioning whether it complies with zoning regulations. Nieto reassured the community that, “The correct building procedures were followed, and the correct building permits have been pulled,” confirming the home meets all local standards despite its size appearing prominent next to vacant lots.
The completion of these homes is poised to bring new families into the area, which Nieto believes will foster community growth and increase town revenue. “Now that those lots are sold, I’m looking forward to seeing new construction take place,” she remarked.
Financially, the Town has successfully paid off all loans associated with the project, totaling $1.8 million for the property acquisition and $1.3 million for the demolition of the prior buildings. “The loans were paid off at the beginning of this fiscal year,” Nieto confirmed, marking a significant milestone in the Town’s financial responsibilities.
As construction progresses, it is important to note that the sidewalk on Castle Road has been temporarily closed. The Town plans to rebuild it upon the completion of the homes, following an engineer’s assessment and a detailed plan.
