UPDATE: A grieving couple in Muskegon, Michigan, has found a unique way to connect with their son after losing him tragically at just 18 years old. Stacey and Alan McCabe have established a wind phone at 1700 Lakeshore Drive, allowing them and others to communicate spiritually with loved ones who have passed away.
On a trail where Michael once rode his bike, the McCabes often visit to reminisce about their son. “He was a happy kid. He was a free spirit,” Stacey shared, her voice filled with emotion. Michael was just beginning his scholarship journey at Muskegon Community College when he died from a devastating incident last October. “We never got to have the empty nest experience,” Stacey said, reflecting on their sudden loss.
The newly installed wind phone is a powerful symbol of love and remembrance. “It’s a phone that is a real phone, but is disconnected,” Stacey explained. “It allows a spiritual call to be made, with the wind carrying your voice to your loved one.” This heartfelt tribute not only serves the McCabes but is intended for the whole community.
Alan stepped into the booth, taking a deep breath before saying, “Hey buddy, getting ready to go a year and a half without you. I miss you.” Tears streamed down his face as he expressed his longing to hear Michael’s voice again. After sharing his love, he stepped out, leaving the booth for Stacey.
“Hi Michael Anthony, it’s Mom. I miss you so much,” she said, her voice trembling. “Tomorrow, I think Dad and I are going to an indoor soccer game… I really wish we could be watching you.” With tears in her eyes, she concluded, “I love you forever. I’ll talk to you again soon, okay?”
The McCabes hope the wind phone offers solace to others facing similar losses. “We didn’t put it in just for us,” Stacey stated. “We hope it gives people a little better sleep at night, knowing they can express their feelings one last time.”
As November winds sweep through Muskegon, the trail not only remembers Michael but also invites others to share their grief and love. The wind phone stands as a poignant reminder that while voices may be silenced, connections can still endure.
Families and friends are encouraged to visit the wind phone at 1700 Lakeshore Drive, where they can place their own calls to the heavens. The McCabes’ mission is clear: to create a space for healing and remembrance, ensuring that Michael’s spirit continues to inspire and connect.
