MnDOT Launches Urgent Warning System for Amish Buggies on Highway 44

BREAKING: The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has just installed new flashing driver alert signals on Highway 44 in Fillmore County to enhance safety for Amish buggies. This urgent measure comes in response to past incidents involving horse-drawn vehicles in a region known for its significant Amish population.

Located between Mabel and Canton, the newly implemented warning system aims to boost motorist awareness as buggies navigate a narrow stretch of road where the shoulder is constrained by guard rails. This configuration forces the buggies to travel on the road, heightening the risk of accidents.

The system employs advanced technology similar to MnDOT’s established Rural Intersection Conflict Warning Systems. A sensor detects the approach of a buggy, triggering a flashing beacon to alert drivers on Highway 44. These beacons will activate when a buggy is approximately 150 feet from the guard rail, providing critical warning for motorists.

Each direction of the highway will feature one sign adorned with an Amish buggy symbol, which lights up when the alert is in effect. These enhancements come at a crucial time, as the area has previously witnessed tragic incidents, including a fatal buggy-vehicle crash in 2023 and another serious accident in 2025.

This newly installed system marks a significant first for MnDOT, aiming to prevent further tragedies and enhance safety for both buggy operators and drivers. The installation is strategically located near the Highway 52 Amish Buggy Byway, a route frequently utilized by the local Amish community.

Officials emphasize that this proactive measure is vital for community safety. MnDOT encourages drivers to remain vigilant and respect the presence of these slow-moving vehicles on the road.

The urgency of this development cannot be overstated. With the local Amish community relying on buggies for transportation, the stakes are high for ensuring their safety on Minnesota roads. Motorists are urged to stay alert as they navigate this section of Highway 44.

As this situation continues to unfold, MnDOT will monitor the system’s effectiveness and make adjustments as necessary. For now, all eyes are on the newly installed flashing signals to see if they can make a substantial difference in preventing accidents in the area.
