UPDATE: Students at McClure Junior High in Western Springs are experiencing an exciting transformation in their fitness education, thanks to a newly renovated fitness room funded by a generous $33,700 grant from the Western Springs Foundation of Educational Excellence. This urgent upgrade provides nearly 500 students with enhanced access to strength training and lifelong fitness skills, aligning with critical physical education goals.
The renovation, which began in June and wrapped up just two months later, features state-of-the-art equipment and a revamped layout designed to accommodate all students. Dina Castillo, a McClure physical education teacher, emphasized the importance of these upgrades, stating, “The upgrades made possible by the grant are important because they transformed the fitness room from a limited, outdated space into a modern, functional space.”
With the new setup, students can engage in a variety of exercises, including strength training, plyometric workouts, and yoga, in a safe and structured environment. “The space allows us to teach foundational skills of lifting, pushing, pulling, hinging, and squatting — skills that support lifelong fitness and athletic development,” Castillo added. This renovation is not just a win for athletes; it provides all students with essential strength training education that builds confidence and promotes long-term health.
Castillo took student feedback seriously during the grant development process, incorporating opinions from conversations and surveys to ensure the new fitness room met their needs. The response from students has been overwhelmingly positive. Student Finnegan Andrew Loughry shared, “What I love about the new fitness room is how much it has really challenged me and made me stronger.” Fellow student Matty Hurliman expressed excitement over the equipment’s versatility, stating, “This equipment allows us to workout with a friend because there is a lifter and spotter.”
The fitness room’s impact extends beyond McClure Junior High as local organizations, including the Celtics Soccer Club and West Suburban Harriers Running Club, are also utilizing the facility. Programs like On Another Level Training offer sports performance and weightlifting specifically designed for middle school and high school girls, further enhancing community engagement.
The Western Springs Foundation of Educational Excellence plays a crucial role in this development. Operating independently from the District 101 School Board, this all-volunteer nonprofit organization is dedicated to enriching educational experiences for students. The Foundation’s board, composed of District 101 parents, raises funds through community events and allocates them to support innovative grant proposals from teachers and administrators.
As students at McClure Junior High embrace their newly renovated fitness space, the community is reminded of the importance of accessible fitness education in fostering a healthier, more active generation. The upgrades not only enhance physical capabilities but also contribute to building a supportive environment that prioritizes lifelong health.
Stay tuned for more updates on how these changes will continue to impact the students and the broader community.
