Maxi Moralez’s Goal Sends NYCFC Past Union in Playoffs

UPDATE: In a thrilling playoff showdown, New York City FC defeated the Philadelphia Union 1-0 on July 30, 2023, advancing to the Eastern Conference final. Maxi Moralez scored the decisive goal, marking his fourth consecutive playoff match with a goal against the Union.

This latest victory sends NYCFC into a face-off against Inter Miami, who triumphed over Cincinnati 4-0 in the other semifinal. The defeat is particularly painful for the Union, who were the top seed and Supporters’ Shield winners, only to face their second early playoff exit in recent years.

The match took place in Chester, where the Union struggled to capitalize on their chances. Despite taking a total of 18 shots, only five were on target, with NYCFC goalkeeper Matt Freese standing tall to deny them. The Union’s inability to convert opportunities proved costly, as they were shut out at home for just the second time this season.

Moralez struck early, scoring in the 28th minute after a well-executed play that saw Nicolas Fernandez set him up for a clear shot past Union’s goalkeeper Andre Blake. From that point on, the Union chased the game, unable to find the back of the net.

“We had our chances, but we just couldn’t find the finish,” said Union midfielder Bruno Damiani after the match. “It’s frustrating to go out like this at home.”

Despite several attempts in the second half, including close efforts from Frankie Westfield and Tai Baribo, the Union could not break through NYCFC’s defense. Freese’s performance was critical in maintaining the lead for the Cityzens, as he made several crucial saves, including a diving stop on a shot from Moralez late in the game.

This match marks a continuation of the intense rivalry between the two teams in the playoffs. The Union have now faced NYCFC in the postseason four times, with the Cityzens emerging victorious on three occasions. Their previous encounters include a notable loss in the 2021 Eastern Conference final when the Union were severely impacted by COVID-19.

As NYCFC celebrates their advancement, the Union must now regroup for the next season, reflecting on missed opportunities and their second consecutive playoff exit. The upcoming Eastern Conference final featuring NYCFC and Inter Miami promises to be a highly anticipated clash, especially with the looming presence of soccer superstar Lionel Messi.
