LAX Shutters Terminal 5 Today for Major Renovation Ahead of 2028 Olympics

UPDATE: Terminal 5 at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) officially closes today, marking a critical step in a major renovation project ahead of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The demolition of Terminal 5 is set to commence immediately, as part of an ambitious plan to revitalize the airport for millions of expected visitors.

Effective today, October 3, 2023, Terminal 5 will be completely shut down as American Airlines relocates its operations to Terminal 4. This follows last week’s moves by JetBlue to Terminal 1 and Spirit Airlines to Terminal 2. The closures are part of an extensive overhaul aimed at enhancing passenger experience and operational efficiency.

Doug Webster, Chief Airport Operations and Maintenance Officer for Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), stated, “As we take this important step toward transforming LAX, the closure of Terminal 5 marks a pivotal moment in our journey to deliver a world-class airport experience.” He emphasized that LAWA is collaborating closely with airline partners to minimize disruptions during this transition.

In a related development, LAX has recently opened the new Midfield Satellite Concourse South, an extension of the Tom Bradley International Terminal, adding over 150,000 square feet and eight gates. This new addition is part of the $30 billion Capital Improvement Program, which encompasses various enhancements including improved roadways and amenities designed to cater to the influx of travelers for significant sporting events like the 2026 World Cup and 2027 Super Bowl.

The urgency of these renovations cannot be overstated, as LAX prepares to welcome a staggering number of visitors in the coming years. Earlier this year, LAWA unveiled a campaign focused on transforming LAX into a cultural hub, with designs inspired by Los Angeles’ rich history, sports, and seasonal changes.

As the demolition of Terminal 5 begins, travelers and airport staff are reminded to stay informed about changes to flight operations and airport services. LAWA is committed to ensuring a smooth transition and is actively working to maintain operational continuity during this period of significant construction.

Stay tuned for further updates on the progress of LAX’s transformation and its preparations for the upcoming global events. With the airport’s future at stake, every development is crucial to creating an experience that reflects Los Angeles’ vibrant culture and hospitality.
