UPDATE: In a thrilling showdown on July 15, 2025, Langdon Area/Munich clinched the Region 2B volleyball title with a decisive victory over Park River/Fordville-Lankin, securing their spot at the state tournament. After dominating the first two sets, the defending state champions faced a brief challenge before rallying back to win the match with scores of 25-9, 25-15, 25-13.
The championship match took place in Devils Lake, where Langdon Area/Munich showcased their resilience. At one point, they trailed 7-5 in the third set, but quickly regained momentum with a series of impressive plays, including standout performances from players like sophomore serve specialist Liv Prouty. Coach Rich Olson praised his team’s defensive efforts, stating, “We had some outstanding digs and won some of the longer rallies, too.”
Notably, the Cardinals’ comeback was pivotal, characterized by a mix of strategic plays and strong teamwork. After an early challenge, they surged ahead, ultimately taking a commanding 19-9 lead in the third set. The final point was sealed with a block from Kemi Morstad, solidifying their victory and another trip to the state tournament.
Park River/Fordville-Lankin’s coach, Nicole Wollangk, recognized her team’s competitive spirit despite the loss. “We know we can compete and play at that level, but execution was our issue tonight,” she remarked. Her team, now standing at 22-14, will still have a chance to qualify for the state tournament in the upcoming qualifier match.
The victory marks a significant moment for Langdon Area/Munich, who previously won the state title under the two-class system. Now, they will compete under a new three-class format, adding an extra layer of excitement as they prepare for the state tournament.
In the third-place match, Benson County defeated New Rockford-Sheyenne 3-1, earning a last-chance opportunity to qualify for the state tournament. Benson County will face the Region 1 runner-up on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the University of Jamestown.
The All-Region 2B team was announced following the title game, featuring standout players from various teams, including Aubrey Kenner from Benson County and Ava Peterson from New Rockford-Sheyenne, who was named the Region 2 Senior of the Year.
As the excitement builds for the state tournament, Langdon Area/Munich is poised to defend their title, fueled by camaraderie and a strong desire to succeed. “I love this group of girls. There is so much young talent, and they’re going to bring it next year too,” expressed senior player Raeleigh Ratzlaff.
