King Salmon Flooding Cleanup Underway as Health Risks Rise

UPDATE: Significant flooding in King Salmon has left residents scrambling to recover following record-high tides last week. As cleanup efforts intensify, health officials are raising alarms about potential dangers linked to contaminated water and mold growth.

Coastal flooding surged in Humboldt Bay over several days, leading to unprecedented water levels. Residents are now dealing with the aftermath, as the Red Cross actively distributes cleanup kits filled with essential tools like gloves and tarps. “We handed out several of those over the weekend, and my understanding is we’re going to continue to do that today,” said Steve Walsh, spokesperson for the Red Cross, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

Health officials are urging residents to take immediate precautions. Mario Kalson, Director of the Division of Environmental Health at the Department of Health and Human Services, advised that “contact with floodwater should be avoided wherever possible as it may contain diluted untreated sewage and other contaminants.” Residents are encouraged to seek professional help for mold removal and to ensure proper cleaning methods are followed.

In a recent advisory, the Humboldt County Planning and Building Department warned of the risks of electrocution due to floodwaters. The Humboldt Community Services District is currently assessing infrastructure damage, but immediate reports indicate significant challenges.

As of now, the extent of damage to homes and businesses remains unclear. However, Patric Esh, program manager for Humboldt County’s Office of Emergency Services, confirmed that the disaster meets the threshold for potential state or federal funding. “If the disaster is severe enough where there is a lot of estimated cost damage, we might be able to get state or federal funding,” Esh stated.

Residents affected by flooding can apply for replacement benefits if they lost food due to the disaster. Households on SNAP should act quickly, as applications must be submitted within 10 days. Cleanup efforts are ongoing, with less severe high tides expected in the coming days. However, residents are reminded that the risk of mold and health hazards remains high. The community is urged to report any flood-related damages to help authorities gauge the disaster’s impact.

As recovery continues, residents are reminded to stay informed and prioritize their health and safety. For further assistance, the Red Cross can be reached at 800-733-2767.
