Kapa‘a Faces Major Traffic Disruptions December 15-17

URGENT UPDATE: Kapa‘a residents are bracing for significant traffic disruptions as road and lane closures are set to begin on December 15. The Kauai County Department of Public Works, in partnership with Hirata and Associates Inc., will conduct crucial geotechnical subsurface exploration, impacting daily commutes across the area.

The closures will take place from December 15 to December 17, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., depending on weather conditions. Commuters are urged to prepare for delays and plan for detours as these necessary interruptions unfold.

The traffic modifications kick off on December 15 with a single-lane closure on Kukui Street, specifically affecting the left turn lane just west of the Kūhiō Highway intersection. On December 16, a section of Kukui Street’s east side at the same highway junction will be completely closed. The disruption will conclude on December 17 with the closure of the south end of Niu Street, adjacent to Kūhiō Highway.

While these closures are bound to create temporary inconveniences, officials assure residents and business owners that access to properties along the affected routes will remain available.

Authorities are stressing the importance of adhering to all posted signage and instructions from flaggers while navigating through or around the work zones. As noted on the county’s official website:

“Access to properties will be provided. Please observe and obey all traffic controls, posted signs, and flaggers.”

Residents are advised to account for additional travel time and remain vigilant for potential delays. As these developments unfold, the community’s cooperation is crucial to easing the impact of the upcoming roadwork.
