Jack Allen Samuelson, Beloved Santa Cruz Icon, Passes Away at 91

BREAKING: Jack Allen Samuelson, a cherished figure in Santa Cruz, has passed away at the age of 91. He died peacefully on December 9, 2025, surrounded by family at his beloved home overlooking the coast.

Samuelson’s death marks the end of an era for the Santa Cruz community, where he spent his entire life, contributing to local organizations and sharing his passions with family and friends. Just a month shy of his 92nd birthday, Jack was known for his adventurous spirit, from his love of golf to his thrilling experiences with fast cars and ocean sports.

Born on January 14, 1934, Jack was a true local, raised in Santa Cruz and educated in its schools, including Santa Cruz High School, where he graduated in 1952. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956, he utilized the GI Bill to attend San Jose State University, where he married his high school sweetheart, Sallie Johnstone.

Jack built a successful career at Lockheed Missiles & Space, working for 35 years at the Santa Cruz Test Base, where he made significant contributions to the aerospace industry. He later took a supervisory role in Sunnyvale, showcasing his dedication to his work and community.

His passion for golf was legendary, as Jack was a fixture at Delaveaga Golf Course, where he played competitively and served on the advisory board. He inspired his grandsons, Scott, Ryan, and Tyler, to embrace the game, passing down his love for golf and its techniques during family gatherings.

Jack’s adventurous nature led him to explore exhilarating hobbies, from racecar driving at Laguna Seca Raceway to diving and hang gliding. His zest for life was evident in every activity he pursued, making unforgettable memories with family and friends, including his unique culinary experiences with seafood, which he shared with his children.

As a dedicated community member, Jack was involved with the Santa Cruz Elks and Native Sons, where he participated in numerous events to support local causes. His commitment to family was unwavering; he attended every graduation, sporting event, and celebration, leaving a lasting impression on his loved ones.

Jack is survived by his children, Julie Walls and Mark Samuelson, and several grandchildren and step-grandchildren who will remember him as a guiding force in their lives. His wife of 37 years, Beverly Firestone, preceded him in death, leaving a legacy of love and adventure.

In the final months of his life, Jack received compassionate care from a dedicated team, including his primary physician, Dr. Chris Bernardi, and the staff at Hospice of Santa Cruz County. His family expresses gratitude for the support and care he received.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Santa Cruz County in Jack’s memory. A private celebration of his life is planned for Spring 2026, honoring a man who was truly beloved in his community.
