UPDATE: Hailey Lewis has just been sworn in as the new mayor of Moscow, taking over from outgoing mayor Art Bettge during a pivotal City Council meeting on Monday. This transition marks the beginning of her four-year term, following a successful election in November that also welcomed three new city council members: Evan Holmes, Sage McCetich, and Scott Sumner.
During his farewell address, Bettge expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve Moscow, emphasizing the city’s growth and prosperity over the past four years. He recounted significant achievements, including the construction of new infrastructure such as the bridge and roundabout on Sixth Street and Mountain View Drive, the addition of three full-time paramedics, and the development of a climate action plan. Bettge highlighted the challenges faced by the city, including the tragic 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students that drew international attention, and ongoing issues with state revenue sharing.
Bettge stated, “The city is doing well and it’s growing and it’s prospering,” underscoring the importance of hard work from the city staff. He expressed confidence in Lewis and the new council members to tackle future challenges effectively.
Lewis, a lifelong resident of Moscow with deep roots in the community, has served on the City Council since 2021. With her family having lived in Moscow for three generations, she stated, “I am incredibly grateful and I will never once take for granted the trust that has been placed in me.” Her commitment to serving her hometown is clear as she emphasizes the council’s role as “your friends and neighbors.”
New council member Scott Sumner expressed enthusiasm for fostering productive discussions, stating, “I think healthy disagreement makes us better and leads to better decisions.” Meanwhile, McCetich shared his gratitude for the community’s support, pledging to serve honorably over the next four years.
Holmes urged the public to hold the council accountable, declaring, “Please call us to task if we’re forgetting that.” This call for community engagement highlights the council’s commitment to prioritizing the well-being of Moscow residents.
Outgoing councilor Julia Parker praised her colleagues and city staff, noting, “I hope the community recognizes how lucky they really are.” Her acknowledgment of the hard work put forth underscores the collaborative spirit within Moscow’s government.
