Greenville High Students Enjoy Festive Holiday Dinner Today

UPDATE: Greenville High School celebrated its annual holiday dinner today, December 9, serving a festive meal to over 1,100 students. The event, organized by the school district’s food and nutrition department, provided a traditional holiday feast that many students may not otherwise experience.

The meal included popular dishes like mashed potatoes and gravy, glazed maple carrots, and freshly roasted ham. Food and Nutrition Director Dan Kuk emphasized the importance of this tradition, stating, “It’s a fun way for us to give back to our student body.”

This annual dinner aims to ensure every student, including those from low-income families and foreign exchange students, has access to a special holiday meal. “We know the socio-economic climate of our students in the district. Not all of them get to participate in this type of meal,” Kuk added.

The event was held during the lunch periods, creating a bustling yet festive atmosphere. Students were treated to Christmas music and festive decorations provided by the DECA students, who also served homemade desserts like apple crumble and cherry turnovers. DECA Vice President Emily Fox highlighted the significance of their involvement, stating, “Doing this means a lot because we are able to provide for everybody, while showing them what DECA is about.”

In addition to the delicious food, the holiday spirit was amplified by a surprise appearance from Claude Johnson, a GHS employee and Greenville City Councilman, who donned a Santa costume and was joined by The Grinch. Sophomores Gabby Pelak and Kendal Taylor expressed their delight, saying the event truly brightened their day. “It’s really nice and it makes me feel festive,” Taylor shared.

Kuk praised his staff for their commitment to making this event a success, saying, “I am blessed to have them. They really go above and beyond.” The holiday dinner is provided free of charge, aligning with the district’s mission to offer free or reduced meals to all students.

As the holiday season approaches, Greenville High School’s celebration not only filled bellies but also fostered a sense of community and joy among students. With the continued support from the school district and dedicated volunteers, this cherished tradition is set to bring festive cheer for years to come.
