URGENT UPDATE: Former students gathered in Fargo today for a self-guided tour of Horace Mann Elementary School before its impending demolition. This emotional event, held on November 26, 2023, allowed attendees to revisit cherished memories in a building that has served the community for over 110 years.
As the clock ticks down to the school’s final days, many reminisced about their childhood experiences. Among them, Adam Korstad highlighted the transformation of the old computer lab into additional instructional space, while the library still displayed historical documents, including yearbooks from the 1960s and PTA records dating back to the 1930s.
Principal Leandra Ostrom expressed the significance of the tour, stating, “We all remember our elementary schools… it’s just wonderful to see it come to life.” With the building set for demolition after the current school year, this is a rare opportunity for former students to reconnect with their past and celebrate the legacy of the school.
The tours are part of a year-long celebration honoring the impact Horace Mann has made in the community. After the demolition, a new facility will rise in its place, also named Horace Mann Elementary, expected to open in 2028. This new chapter promises to honor the rich history while serving future generations.
Three more tours are scheduled before the school year concludes. The next tour will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. on December 29, 2023, followed by events on April 11 from noon to 4 p.m. and May 13 from 5:30 to 8 p.m.. Ostrom encourages everyone to join and share their memories, stating, “The people make the building… it’s about the families, it’s about the students, it’s about the legacies built in these hallways.”
As demolition approaches, the community is invited to reflect on the past and look forward to the future. Don’t miss this chance to walk down memory lane and celebrate the history of Horace Mann Elementary.
