Former School Transforms into Urgent Day Care Center in Wanamingo

UPDATE: A vital transformation is underway in Wanamingo, Minnesota, as the former Kenyon-Wanamingo Elementary School rapidly shifts to become the much-needed Golden Days & Little Rays Daycare and Activities Center. Local entrepreneur Ruthie Welvemoed is leading this urgent initiative, aiming to address the pressing need for child care services in the community.

The school, which closed in January 2023 due to declining enrollment and necessary repairs, was sold in May 2023 before the academic year concluded. Welvemoed’s vision for the building comes at a crucial time, as access to day care has become increasingly scarce in the area. “In our area, it’s such a need,” Welvemoed emphasized, highlighting the community’s reliance on this resource, particularly for commuting families due to its proximity to U.S. Highway 52.

Once operational, the center will cater to up to 103 children, with programs designed for infants, toddlers, and school-aged kids. The facility will also offer after-school care and summer programming. Welvemoed noted that there is already a waiting list, reflecting the community’s enthusiasm and demand for the center. “We’ve had a really great welcoming from the community about this idea,” she added, showcasing the strong support for this initiative.

The timeline for the center’s opening is still pending, as the establishment is currently awaiting licensing from the state. Though no exact dates are set, Welvemoed plans for a soft launch once approvals are secured, gradually increasing capacity rather than taking in the maximum number of children immediately.

In a twist of fate, the challenges posed by the school’s aging roof have been mitigated thanks to Welvemoed’s uncle, who recently retired from the roofing industry and is now assisting with necessary repairs. This support is crucial as the community eagerly anticipates the center’s debut.

Looking ahead, Welvemoed envisions the center as more than just a day care. She hopes to create a space where both young and elderly members of the community can engage with one another. “I have a really big heart for younger kids as well as for senior citizens,” she expressed, indicating plans for future programming that could bridge generations within the community.

As the community rallies around this initiative, the urgency for child care solutions in Wanamingo has never been clearer. The opening of the Golden Days & Little Rays Daycare and Activities Center represents a critical step in addressing this demand, promising not only to support families but also to foster connections across age groups.
