Fitchburg Launches Urgent Food Donation Drive Amid SNAP Uncertainty

URGENT UPDATE: The city of Fitchburg has launched a critical city-wide food collection initiative as concerns grow over the potential suspension of SNAP benefits in November. With 12,773 residents, or approximately 30% of the population, relying on these benefits to feed their families, immediate action is needed to support our community.

Authorities confirm that food donations will be accepted at three designated locations across Fitchburg:
Market Basket, 399 John Fitch Hwy., Fitchburg
Market Basket, 130 Water St., Fitchburg
City Hall, 718 Main St., Fitchburg

All donations will go directly to the City of Fitchburg’s food distribution efforts. Any remaining items once SNAP benefits are reinstated will be allocated to the Fitchburg Public Schools. Residents are urged to consider picking up extra non-perishable food items during their next grocery trip.

The city specifies that all donations must be non-perishable, unopened, and not expired. The most needed items include:
– Canned vegetables, beans, soups, and proteins (like tuna)
– Rice, mac and cheese, and pasta
– Shelf-stable milks and juices
– Peanut butter and applesauce
– Cereal, oatmeal, and granola bars

In addition to the donation drive, Fitchburg will host a food distribution event on November 7, 2023, from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM at the Legislative Building, located at 700 Main St., Fitchburg. This event will operate on a first-come, first-served basis, depending on the amount of donations received. Residents must show proof of Fitchburg residency and SNAP enrollment to participate.

As the city navigates this urgent situation, officials emphasize the importance of community support. Additional food distribution dates will be announced if SNAP benefits remain suspended.

Please share this information widely to ensure that those who can contribute do so, and those in need are aware of the support available. Your involvement could make a significant difference in the lives of many Fitchburg residents during this challenging time.
