Fitchburg Art Museum Reopens with Exciting Centennial Events

UPDATE: The Fitchburg Art Museum (FAM) has officially reopened its doors, inviting art enthusiasts back just in time for its centennial celebration. The museum is now showcasing “Tara Sellios: Ask Now the Beasts,” which will be on view through May 24, 2026. This timely reopening provides a unique opportunity for visitors to explore the captivating works of Boston-based artist Tara Sellios, whose striking photographs reveal the beauty inherent in the grotesque.

Sellios utilizes a large format 8 X 10 camera to capture vivid details of her still life vignettes, which include organic materials such as animal bones, insect specimens, and dried flowers. Drawing inspiration from Christian devotionals and historical traditions of still life painting, her work challenges perceptions of life and death, as articulated in the title of her series, which references the Book of Job.

In addition, FAM is hosting “FESTIVAL: A Celebration of African Art,” the first exhibition in a series honoring its centennial. This collection spans time and culture, showcasing significant pieces from the museum’s African Art collection and exploring universal themes of life, death, power, and celebration. It features artworks from the first millennium CE to contemporary sculptures, highlighting the diversity and richness of African cultures.

Join the festivities today, December 5, 2025, from 5:30 PM to 8 PM. The annual meeting will include a 100th Anniversary Toast and a special appearance by FAM founder Eleanor Norcross, portrayed by Sally Cragin from Stratton Players. Attendees will enjoy drinks and appetizers from Finicky Fork, with a sneak peek of the centennial exhibition.

This event is FREE and open to the public, though early sign-up is encouraged to assist with planning. FAM invites everyone to celebrate this significant milestone in its history.
