Ferndale Pilot to Lead Spectacular Flyover at Chiefs-Colts Game

UPDATE: Ferndale native and Air Force Lt. Col. Dane Coppini has been chosen to pilot a stunning flyover at the Kansas City Chiefs versus Indianapolis Colts NFL game on Sunday at 10 a.m. This special event, featuring four jets, highlights Military Appreciation Month and is set to captivate fans at Arrowhead Stadium.

Coppini, with 15 years of flight experience, is assigned to the 87th Flying Training Squadron, nicknamed the “Red Bulls.” He typically operates out of Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Texas, the top pilot-producing base in the Air Force.

“This is a unique opportunity for me and my squadron,” Coppini stated. “We apply for a few flyovers each year, and this will be my first.”

The flyover will feature two pilots per T-38C Talon, the U.S. Air Force’s primary training jet. These jets are vital for training pilots who will eventually fly advanced aircraft.

Coppini’s military journey began 19 years ago when he joined the Air Force as an enlisted security forces member. After his first deployment, he pursued flight training, becoming a pilot candidate. His impressive career includes 10 deployments, serving in various capacities across Africa, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

As he reflects on his roots, Coppini says, “The support from family and friends back home has been incredible.” He cherishes his upbringing in Ferndale and recognizes how it shaped his character and career.

Coppini’s mother, Carrie Coppini, expressed immense pride in her son’s achievements, stating, “We’re super proud of him. He’s a high flier!” She shared that the family is eagerly planning to watch the game together.

With his extensive experience, Coppini currently trains future fighter pilots, emphasizing the joy he finds in flying. “It’s a blessing to be able to fly daily and teach the next generation,” he noted.

As the Chiefs and Colts prepare for the game, fans can expect an exhilarating display of aerial prowess that honors military service members. The flyover not only showcases the skill of Lt. Col. Coppini but also serves as a tribute to all veterans, making this event a must-watch on Sunday.
