UPDATE: A historic honor is set for Friday, December 29, 2023, as the monthly Humboldt Heroes ceremony will recognize a remarkable father-son duo, Roy Cantu and his father, Clemente Cantu, for their dedicated military service in the Army and Navy.
This is the first time in the event’s history that a father and son will be celebrated together, making this moment even more special for the Humboldt County community. The event will take place at noon in the lobby of the Eureka Inn, located at 518 Seventh Street, Eureka.
Clemente Cantu, born in February 1929, enlisted in the Army in 1948 and served in Italy as part of the occupational forces. He was not only a soldier but also a trumpet player who contributed to his unit’s band. After marrying his wife, Maria, in 1949, he returned to the United States in 1952, where he continued his service with the National Guard until his retirement in 1989.
Roy Cantu, born in Italy in October 1950, followed in his father’s footsteps by enlisting in the Navy on Veterans’ Day, November 11, 1968. Over his 21-year career, he served aboard three nuclear ballistic missile submarines and completed 13 patrols, showcasing his commitment to his country. He later became a master training specialist, imparting his knowledge to future naval personnel.
Their stories exemplify a legacy of service and dedication, deeply rooted in family and community. As Clemente Cantu reflects on his life in Humboldt County, he expresses joy in the small-town atmosphere, while Roy finds fulfillment in close family ties and the region’s natural beauty.
The Humboldt Heroes program typically honors local veterans on the last Friday of each month, and this celebration is particularly poignant as it highlights the personal sacrifices and achievements of these two veterans.
