UPDATE: A 34-year-old man from Edison, New Jersey, has just pleaded guilty in a shocking case of theft targeting elderly shoppers across multiple states. Erick Christian Luna de la Cruz is linked to a coordinated scheme that exploited the vulnerabilities of seniors, particularly at major retail stores like Trader Joe’s and TJ Maxx.
The FBI began its investigation in 2022 after multiple reports emerged of distraction thefts aimed at elderly women in retail locations across Connecticut, North Carolina, Rhode Island, and South Carolina. This alarming trend revealed a network of criminals using fake passports and rental cars to commit their crimes.
Court documents indicate that Luna de la Cruz and his accomplices would travel nationwide to target unsuspecting victims, stealing wallets and using the stolen credit and debit cards to purchase electronic devices. Stolen goods were then shipped to a co-conspirator’s address in Paterson, New Jersey, to further evade law enforcement.
The scheme took a darker turn when investigators uncovered that the group used fake identification to rent vehicles crucial to their operations. The crime spree unfolded between September 2023 and March 2024, culminating in Luna de la Cruz’s arrest on June 28, 2024.
Luna de la Cruz pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit access device fraud and now faces a potential sentence of up to five years in federal prison. He has been released on a $100,000 bond and is under electronic monitoring. A sentencing date is set for April 22, 2024.
This case highlights the urgent need for increased awareness and protection for vulnerable populations against sophisticated theft schemes. As investigations continue, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities in stores.
