UPDATE: Renowned artist Cheryl Jean Husby has passed away peacefully at the age of 76 on October 14, 2025, surrounded by her beloved family at St. Luke’s Hospital. This poignant moment has left the community mourning the loss of a vibrant soul who touched many lives through her art and generosity.
Cheryl was born in Minneapolis on December 30, 1948, to Dorothy and George Chergosky. She graduated from U-High in 1966 and went on to earn her B.F.A., M.A., and M.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin Superior and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville between 1983 and 1986. Her artistic journey included founding Husby Pottery, which took her across the United States, including annual stays in the Florida Keys.
Cheryl was not only an artist but a passionate community member, known for hosting lively gatherings and contributing to local initiatives through her work with the Duluth Art Institute and the Duluth Preservation Alliance. Her creativity extended to baking, gardening, and spending quality time with her family, where she was best known for her delectable apple pie and enthusiastic support for her children’s and grandchildren’s endeavors.
Her family has expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated teams at St. Luke’s, Mayo Clinic, and other care centers that supported her during her final days. They invite friends and community members to celebrate her life at First Lutheran Church, located at 1100 E. Superior Street, with a visitation at 10:00 AM on November 5, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM and a reception thereafter.
