Camden Hills Wins First State Football Championship in History

UPDATE: Camden Hills has made history by clinching its first-ever state football championship, defeating Spruce Mountain 52-26 in a thrilling showdown on November 15, 2023, at Edward Little High School. The Windjammers showcased an exceptional performance, driven by senior quarterback Hollis Schwalm, who was instrumental in securing this monumental victory.

In the days leading up to the championship game, Schwalm found extra motivation in new gym banners that lacked championship dates. “That needs to change,” he declared, and change it did. Schwalm dominated the field, contributing to 32 points of the team’s total, including three rushing touchdowns and one touchdown pass.

The Windjammers executed a near-perfect offensive strategy, supported by a resilient defense that forced five turnovers. Coach Chris Christie praised his team’s heart and determination, stating, “We played with utter heart, grit, and determination today.”

The game began with a shaky start for Camden Hills, but the team quickly recovered. After a defensive hold pinned them deep in their territory, they launched a stunning 95-yard drive, capped off by Schwalm’s touchdown pass to Justin Batty. By halftime, Camden Hills held a commanding lead of 32-12, with Schwalm making a spectacular 67-yard touchdown run that left the Spruce Mountain defense scrambling.

The Windjammers didn’t let up in the second half, as running backs Braden Beveridge, Ethan Dingle, and Ben Hoffman added rushing touchdowns to the scoreboard. Each play highlighted the relentless spirit of the team, determined to write their name in school history. “We didn’t want to let off the gas pedal,” Beveridge remarked, emphasizing the team’s commitment to maintaining their lead.

With this victory, Camden Hills wraps up the season with an impressive record of 10-1, while Spruce Mountain concludes its campaign at 8-2. The Windjammers outscored their opponents 292-154 during the regular season and demonstrated their dominance with a 134-26 playoff run.

“We came in here confident,” Batty expressed, reflecting on the team’s preparation and focus throughout the season. Coach Christie also highlighted the team’s growth, stating, “About four weeks ago we checked our egos and started playing together as a team. The future looks pretty solid for us.”

This historic victory marks a significant milestone for Camden Hills, a program that only became a full-fledged varsity team in 2009. After years of challenges, including a season cancellation due to player safety concerns, the Windjammers have finally achieved the ultimate goal. “Now we can put our names on that empty banner in the gym,” Schwalm concluded.

As excitement builds around this victory, the Camden Hills community celebrates a new chapter in its football history. The Windjammers have shown that with hard work, determination, and teamwork, dreams can become a reality. As they look forward to the next season, this championship victory will undoubtedly inspire future generations of players.
