UPDATE: A homeless man was arrested for armed robbery early this morning after stealing a cash register from a 7-11 convenience store in downtown Boston. The incident occurred just after 5 a.m. at 50 Summer St., where police responded to a breaking and entering report.

Authorities arrived to find the store’s front glass door shattered and the cash register missing. As officers spoke with a store employee, they identified a suspect across the street matching the description provided. When police attempted to apprehend him, he resisted and threatened to kill the officers.

In a statement, the Boston Police Department detailed the encounter: “After multiple de-escalation tactics, the suspect was handcuffed and the stolen merchandise was recovered.” The suspect, identified as Michael Waterman, 40, is a resident of the Southampton Street Shelter in Roxbury. He faces multiple charges, including larceny from a building, armed robbery, breaking and entering at night for a felony, assault with a dangerous weapon, and threatening police officers.

The arrest occurred amid a busy 24-hour period for the Boston Police, who logged a total of 96 incidents including one robbery and three aggravated assaults. The department emphasizes that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of crime in urban areas and raises questions about the safety of convenience stores during early hours. As police continue to investigate, community members are urged to stay vigilant.
