Boston Man Arrested After Poll Worker Buffet Outburst

UPDATE: A chaotic scene unfolded at a Dorchester polling place as a man was arrested for assaulting a police officer during an outburst over food he believed he was entitled to. The incident occurred at the Metropolitan Baptist Church at approximately 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, prompting immediate police intervention.

Richard Futrell, aged 46, was charged with multiple offenses after confronting a poll worker over a buffet set up for voting officials. According to reports, Futrell aggressively claimed that he was “entitled” to partake in the food due to the loss of his SNAP benefits under former President Trump.

Witnesses reported that Futrell “stepped in [the poll worker’s] face” and verbally berated her when she informed him that he could not help himself to the food. The worker expressed feeling “intimidated” and feared for her safety, as detailed in an incident report obtained by the Herald.

Voting officials attempted to escort Futrell out of the polling location, but he escalated the situation by blocking a doorway, hindering other voters from entering. One voter even recounted having to “stand back” due to Futrell’s aggressive behavior.

The situation intensified when Futrell began to yell about his government assistance, causing alarm among voters and officials present. Officers arrived on the scene to restore order, but Futrell resisted, reportedly yelling at them and attempting to record the confrontation.

As officers tried to escort him out, Futrell allegedly pushed one officer and began resisting arrest, leading to a physical struggle. Eventually, police were able to restrain him and place him in handcuffs.

Prosecutors from the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office have requested a $1,000 bail for Futrell. He faces serious charges, including assault and battery on a police officer, disturbing a public assembly, interfering with an election official, and resisting arrest.

This incident not only highlights the tensions surrounding voting but also raises concerns over public safety at polling places. Officials are urging voters to remain calm and focused on the electoral process as they navigate this unsettling event.
