Beloved Educator John “Jack” Scirocco Passes Away at 84

UPDATE: The community is mourning the loss of John “Jack” Scirocco, who passed away peacefully on November 4, 2025, at the age of 84. Surrounded by his loving family, Jack leaves behind a legacy of dedication and passion for education that spanned five decades.

Born on September 19, 1941, in Schenectady, New York, Jack was a devoted husband, father, and educator. He graduated from Mont Pleasant High School in 1959 and earned his bachelor’s degree from Niagara University in 1963, followed by a master’s degree from The College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY.

Jack’s military service began in 1963 with the Army National Guard, transitioning to the Army Reserves two years later. His commitment to service was matched only by his dedication to teaching. Starting at Mount Carmel Elementary School, Jack later spent 27 years teaching third grade at Fort Edward Union Free Elementary School, culminating in an impressive 50 years of nurturing young minds.

Jack’s love for education extended beyond the classroom. After retirement, he joined his wife, Carol Malizia, at their family-run daycare, Lil’ Bits Daycare, which supported their daughters’ education while continuing his passion for teaching.

A sports enthusiast, Jack’s childhood baseball achievements include winning the 1954 Little League World Series Championship in Williamsport, PA, a feat recognized by the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He wore his Yankees cap proudly and shared a lifelong love for baseball and basketball, being a notable member of the 1959 Championship Team at Mount Pleasant High School.

Jack is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Carol; his daughters, Michele Moynihan, Mia Scirocco, and Marisa Benoit; and his grandsons, Cameron and Kieran Rhodes. He also leaves behind his sisters, Mary Jane Matousek and Madeline Chirico, while being predeceased by his brother, Peter Scirocco.
