URGENT UPDATE: The community of Waterford is mourning the loss of **James Donald “Jim” Early**, who passed away peacefully at the age of **87** on **December 18, 2025**. Known for his commitment to education and service, Jim’s impact on countless lives resonates deeply throughout the region.
Born on **July 3**, Jim celebrated his birthday with the entire nation every Fourth of July. He was a cherished son of the late **Joseph A. Early, Esq.**, and **Loretto Powers Early**, being the third of five siblings. Jim is survived by his loving sister, **Elizabeth M. Early**, and a large extended family, including many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
Jim was married to **Helen K. Clark** in **June 1967**, and together they raised five daughters. He is remembered fondly by his surviving children: **Grace E. Boss**, **Jane F. Early**, **Margaret H. Warner**, and **Kathleen L. Early**, as well as his late daughter, **Mary Ellen Early**, who passed away earlier this year on **June 26, 2025**. He leaves behind **nine grandchildren**, each of whom he adored deeply.
Jim Early was not just a devoted family man but also a respected educator. He began his career as a Guidance Counselor at **St. Mary’s Academy** in Glens Falls before taking a position at **Hudson Valley Community College** in **August 1967**, where he taught English Composition until his retirement in **December 1999**. His influence shaped many young minds, and his legacy will be felt for generations.
Beyond education, Jim dedicated himself to his community as a member of the **J. W. Ford Hose Volunteer Fire Department** for over **57 years**, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to service. He also served as Sole Assessor for the Town and Village of Waterford for a decade, showcasing his integrity and dedication to public service.
In his later years, Jim struggled with health issues and was cared for at the **Eddy Heritage House Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center** in Troy. His final days were marked by the love and support of his family and friends.
Funeral services are scheduled for **Tuesday at 11:30 a.m.** from the **Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home** in Waterford, followed by a mass at **St. Mary of the Assumption Church** at **noon**. Interment will take place at **St. Mary’s Cemetery** in Waterford. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at the funeral home on **Monday from 4 to 7 p.m.**.
