Tomlin Confident Metcalf Will Play Against Dolphins After Hospital Stay

PITTSBURGH – In a recent press conference, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin expressed optimism regarding the availability of wide receiver DK Metcalf for the upcoming game against the Miami Dolphins on December 11, 2023. Metcalf was hospitalized overnight in Baltimore after experiencing stomach pains following the Steelers’ victory over the Baltimore Ravens.

Tomlin stated, “He’s moving in the right direction. I don’t think it’s going to jeopardize his availability at all, but it certainly may jeopardize his availability at the early portions of the week from a practice standpoint.” The coach praised the team’s medical staff for their swift response, ensuring Metcalf’s safety during and after the game.

During the Steelers’ 27-22 win on December 3, 2023, Metcalf recorded a season-high 148 yards on seven receptions. After the game, he reported discomfort and was escorted off the team flight by medical personnel. “He got hit in the abdomen or stomach in-game,” Tomlin said. “I think they gave him some basic over-the-counter remedies in-game like Pepto or something like that. It got probably progressively worse after the game.”

Tomlin emphasized the importance of caution in such situations, stating that the medical team wanted to fully understand Metcalf’s condition before allowing him to fly. “We just exercised an abundance of caution. We didn’t want to get him in the air without having a complete understanding about what he was dealing with,” he said.

Despite Metcalf’s likely return, the Steelers face uncertainty regarding several other players. Tight end Darnell Washington, offensive tackle Andrus Peat, and linebacker Malik Harrison are all in concussion protocol. Additionally, cornerback James Pierre (calf) and defensive lineman Keeanu Benton (ankle) may have limited participation in practice due to injuries sustained during the game.

Tomlin mentioned that safety Kyle Dugger (hand) has “a chance” to return after missing the last game, while the status of first-round draft pick Derrick Harmon (knee) remains unclear. Tomlin noted that Harmon’s participation in practice will determine his availability for the game.

With multiple injuries affecting the team and an added preparation day ahead of “Monday Night Football,” Tomlin opted to give the Steelers (7-6) an off day on December 6. The team is set to resume practice on December 7 with a normal Wednesday schedule.

“We just deemed it appropriate to give ourselves another additional 24 hours of recovery this week,” Tomlin explained. “That’s why we’ve taken the approach that we’ve taken this week. We’ll give guys some additional time to rest and recuperate and be able to put their hand in the pile.”

As the Steelers prepare for their upcoming matchup, the focus will be on ensuring the health of key players while aiming for a crucial win against the Dolphins, who have shown strong defensive capabilities, allowing only an average of 13.3 points per game in their last four victories.
