Staten Island vs. New Jersey Challenge Set for Sunday Showdown

The 19th annual Coaches Choice USA Staten Island vs. New Jersey Challenge is set to take place on Sunday, showcasing a total of five exciting games at Moore Catholic in Graniteville. This year’s event introduces a unique twist, particularly in the second matchup featuring Staten Island Academy against Bound Brook, where both head coaches are distinguished former winners of the Jaques Award.

Sandy Litkenhaus, who won the prestigious Jaques Award following the 1986-87 season, is embarking on her first year as head coach of Staten Island Academy. Opposing her is Jen Derenjanik, one of only two three-time Jaques winners, recognized for her achievements from 1998 to 2000. Derenjanik is currently in her 12th season leading the Bound Brook program. Both coaches were once stars at the now-defunct St. Peter’s Girls High School, adding an emotional layer to this matchup.

The event is made possible through the efforts of former Staten Islander and St. John Villa varsity coach James Martinos, who has played a vital role in organizing this annual competition. The games scheduled for Sunday include:

– Tottenville vs. Spotswood at 11:00 a.m.
– Staten Island Academy vs. Bound Brook at 12:30 p.m.
– Notre Dame Academy vs. Mount St. Mary at 14:05 p.m.
– St. Joseph by-the-Sea vs. East Brunswick at 15:45 p.m.
– Moore Catholic vs. Snyder at 17:20 p.m.

This year’s challenge not only highlights the competitive spirit of high school basketball but also celebrates the legacy of coaching excellence on Staten Island. The event is anticipated to attract a large crowd, eager to witness some of the best young talent from both Staten Island and New Jersey in action.
