Seattle Mariners Secure Rob Refsnyder with One-Year Contract

The Seattle Mariners have signed outfielder Rob Refsnyder to a one-year contract, enhancing their roster with a veteran right-handed hitter. This announcement came on Monday, adding a player who brings a wealth of experience to the team. Refsnyder, who will turn 35 years old in March, previously played for the Boston Red Sox over the last four seasons.

In the 2023 season, Refsnyder showcased his capabilities, achieving a batting average of .269 with nine home runs and 30 RBIs across 70 games and 209 plate appearances. His performance positions him as a valuable asset for the Mariners, particularly as a designated hitter against left-handed pitchers. Additionally, his versatility allows him to serve in the corner outfield positions and potentially act as a backup for Josh Naylor at first base.

Mariners general manager Justin Hollander emphasized Refsnyder’s track record, stating, “Rob has been one of the most productive hitters against left-handed pitching over the last four seasons and provides balance and impact offensively to our lineup.” This sentiment reflects the team’s strategy in bolstering their offensive capabilities for the upcoming season.

Refsnyder has consistently demonstrated his proficiency against left-handed pitchers, boasting a batting average above .300 against them for the past five consecutive seasons. Over his 10-year career in Major League Baseball (MLB), he has recorded a career batting average of .255, alongside 33 home runs and a .730 OPS. His journey in the MLB includes stints with various teams, including the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Tampa Bay Rays, Texas Rangers, Minnesota Twins, and the Red Sox.

Born in South Korea, Refsnyder’s accomplishments extend beyond his professional career; he was recognized as the Most Outstanding Player at the 2012 College World Series, where he played a pivotal role in helping the University of Arizona secure the NCAA championship.

As the Mariners prepare for the upcoming season, the addition of Refsnyder is expected to strengthen their batting lineup and provide a tactical advantage against left-handed pitching. His experience and proven performance could be critical as the team aims for success in the competitive landscape of Major League Baseball.
