The Toronto Blue Jays have announced that three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer will take the mound for Game 3 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on October 16, 2023. The matchup will see Scherzer face off against Dodgers right-hander Tyler Glasnow as the series heads to Southern California, tied at one game each.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider shared the news following a dramatic Game 7 victory in the American League Championship Series. Scherzer, known for his competitive nature, approached Schneider with a direct question: “When am I starting in the World Series?” Schneider laughed, recalling their interaction, “I was like, ‘Max, I’m enjoying a beer, man.’ He’s so regimented and wants to know what he’s doing.”
Scherzer’s Experience and Legacy
At 41 years old, Scherzer is excited to make his fifth start in a World Series. “This is what you play for, to be able to get to this spot, to get to this moment, to have a shot at it,” he said. Reflecting on his journey, Scherzer emphasized the rarity of reaching this stage, noting, “There are so many great players that have never gotten to a World Series.”
Despite being left off Toronto’s roster during the Division Series against the New York Yankees, Scherzer has proven his worth this postseason. He made one start, earning a win against Seattle in Game 4 of the ALCS, where he pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs. This performance marked his eighth career postseason victory and his first since clinching the World Series title with the Washington Nationals in 2019.
Notably, Scherzer became the oldest pitcher to start a postseason game since Jamie Moyer in 2008. In his last outing, he demonstrated his competitive spirit and determination when, during a mound visit, he expressed his desire to stay in the game. Schneider respected his wishes, allowing Scherzer to continue pitching.
Facing the Dodgers’ Glasnow
On the opposing side, Glasnow has also had a strong postseason, making two starts and one relief appearance with a remarkable 0.68 ERA, allowing just one run over 13 1/3 innings. Although he is still seeking his first postseason win this October, his performance has been critical to the Dodgers’ success.
Schneider acknowledges the challenge posed by Glasnow, highlighting the importance of this matchup. “It’s going to be a good test for us in Game 3,” he stated. Meanwhile, the Dodgers are set to have Shohei Ohtani on the mound for Game 4 against Toronto’s Shane Bieber.
The excitement continues to build as the World Series progresses, with fans eagerly anticipating the clash between these two powerhouse teams. Scherzer’s experience and Glasnow’s impressive form will undoubtedly make for a thrilling encounter on Monday night.
